We recently had an SEO audit carried out, which identified a significant technical issue with the international structure of our Shopify store.

Our Shopify store is configured with subfolders for Germany (/de/), France (/fr/) and Switzerland (/de-ch/, /fr-ch/). On paper, this structure is correct. However, in practice, market and language detection is handled through a JavaScript redirect based on the visitor's IP address. As a result, visitors are automatically redirected to the appropriate language version.

The problem is that Google crawls websites from a US-based IP address and does not reliably follow JavaScript redirects. As a result, Google primarily indexes the Dutch version of our website, making us virtually invisible in the organic search results for Germany, France, and Switzerland.

This has led to a large number of SEO issues, including more than 2,300 duplicate page titles, over 2,000 duplicate H1 headings, and only 1,990 indexed pages out of more than 17,500 known URLs.

For context, we currently use Langify, with the language displayed based on the visitor's browser language. We understand this is not the ideal setup, but it is important to know that this configuration is currently active.

From what we understand, this is a well-known issue in Shopify stores that rely on JavaScript-based language and market redirects. We therefore expect that someone with experience in Shopify Markets and international SEO will immediately recognize the problem and be familiar with the standard solution(s). We do not expect this to require a completely custom-built solution, but rather the correct implementation of Shopify's native international functionality.
