IMU Data Processing Task

You are clever, and understand Madgwick and Kalman (or Mahony) filters for AHRS Attitude and Heading Reference Systems. You may also know EKF or UKF and RTS Rauch-Tung-Striebel Smoother, or at least be comfortable implementing these.

You know signal processing well, and have experience in orientation detection. You might also be comfortable with OSM Open Street Map, but less important.

You are ok to work on a work diary and collaborate with us and have some VIDEO calls to discuss your work. You are independent, and are a real person, not an AI bot or a fake profile as I’m sick of reporting these. You are comfortable with C++, though you are ok to use Octave or Matlab to begin. Final delivery is C++ code.

SCENARIO
A smartphone IMU is located within a vehicle, in an unknown orientation, driven along a lengthy route. Time series sensor data is captured at high frequency: Acc, Gyro, Mag & Pressure & GPS.

TASK 1
De-Rotate the data to align with the vehicle frame (excluding YAW), so tilt and roll are correct - presumably using gravity / accelerometers.

TASK 2
Clean up the signal better. Apply Madgwick (or Mahoney) bi-directionally, and or Kalman or using an Invariant Rauch-Tung-Striebel Smoother.
We post-process data in batch, not live, so want to use forward data points to improve the signal. We do NOT want a low pass moving average / median filter, but something smarter like RTS or at least bi-directional Madgwick.

TASK 3
De-rotate YAW using GPS. This Yaw task is separately listed, as we won’t always have GPS.

TASK 4
Graph and export the trip data (GPS YAW corrected) with the additional values:
Pitch angle
Lateral acceleration
Angular YAW velocity
Vertical acceleration
Vertical velocity
Magnetometer values XYZ (Specifically now in the vehicle frame and YAW corrected from GPS)

TASK 5
Determine compass bearing from the tilt corrected magnetometer (e.g. Ellipsoid fit and remove magnetic errors)

TASK 6
Use Kalman filters or others to calibrate the gyro against the compass, so the gyro reflects the compass, and is drift corrected. We want the long term stability and resolution of the gyro, but the heading from the (noisier and more error prone) compass.

TASK 7
Stop using GPS. Figure out a way to determine the vehicle’s forward heading bearing, WITHOUT GPS. Suggest possible methods to us first, to find the Gyro/North bearing offset so we can determine which bearing the car was driving.
Then, or if stuck, implement the half dozen methods we have already devised and see which works best - or use several of them in fusion.

There are yet more tasks in this domain, but this is plenty to cover for now.

Client is currently on an ai platform that integrates with GHL. I need it moved off the existing platform onto voiceflow, using make.com to integrate. The prompts are all done. One is completley built out and the other two are similiar, were just waiting for the client to finish mapping out the other 2 (which are similiar in some ways but content is different).
